Setting Up A Writing Folder

|

At the beginning of the school year, we spend time as a class setting up our writing folders.  We like to involve my students, so they know what is included and how to use them.  We use them so much and first graders feel so important to have a writing folder.

During the back-to-school season, we purchase poly two-pocket folders with prongs from Target.  You can also get them on Amazon.  These folders hold up well with first graders and are still in great shape at the end of the school year.

Before we begin to put the folders together, we print out labels that say “still working” and “finished.” A  green dot is put on the “still working” labels and a red dot is put on the “finished” labels.  This helps my non-readers determine which is which.  After prepping the labels, we are ready to put together our folders.

First, we give them a label and we learn where to place the labels.

Next, we learn how to work the prongs and place a couple of word lists into our folder.  We always start out with family words, school words, and feeling words.   More word lists are added as the year progresses.

Once the folders are made, they are ready for work on writing and the writer’s workshop.

  1. I love the family and school word list. Do you have a copy that you’d be willing to share with me? Thanks so much!
