Favorite Apple Books

Below you will find some of our favorite apple-themed books for the classroom. There are a mixture of fiction and nonfiction titles listed. What are some of your favorite apple-themed books? We read these the week we explored apples with our five senses.

Bad Apple

Bad Apple by Edward Hemingway is a fun fiction book that addresses the reality of name calling. Mac, an apple meets Will, a worm, and they become good friends. But apples aren’t supposed to like worms, and Mac gets called “rotten” and “bad apple.” At first Mac doesn’t know what to do, but after a lonely day without Will, Mac decides he’d rather be a bad apple with Will than a sad apple without him. This book is filled with fun apple puns, and makes for a great read aloud.

How to Make An Apple Pie and See the World

The book How to Make An Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman has been a long-time favorite of mine. Maybe because it reminds me of the days I traveled abroad. In this story, the author takes readers around the world to gather the ingredients needed to make an apple pie. There is even a simple apple pie recipe at the end of the story.

They plan to use the apples to make applesauce. Every year they use the special pot that has been in the family for generations to make applesauce. In this story, you will get to follow the process of making delicious applesauce!

Apple Farmer Annie

Apple Farmer Annie by Monica Wellington is a story about an apple farmer named Annie. We follow Annie through the process of picking and sorting her apples. The reader learns all of the ways that Annie uses the apples. My favorite part of the book is when we learn about how Annie takes some of her apples to the farmer’s market. I feel like many of my students can make a connection to this story.

One Green Apple

Even Bunting has done it again with an amazing book called One Green Apple. In this story, Farah feels alone because she is new to the country and does not know the language. She takes a field trip to an apple orchard with her classmates and discovers that many of the same sounds that she is familiar with at her new home are the same as her original home. These familiar sounds help her build connections with her new classmates. This is a must-have for your classroom library.
