Book Talk Tuesday- First Day Jitters

|

Today I wanted to share a book that I believe most people know about, but since it is a first day of school favorite of mine I want to revisit it…just in case you don’t know about it. First Day Jitters by Julie Dannenberg is a must have.

This book is so fun to read to my students because we make assumptions throughout the whole book and it is always fun for them to see who really has the jitters.

This book has a lot of fun vocabulary in it.  Some of my favorite words are jitters, chuckled and trudged.

After reading the book, we dance the jitterbug, and make our own jitterbugs to chase those jitters away.  It’s a fun and easy take home project for them on the first day of school.  I also can get a feel for  who can cut and who needs to some more practice this this skill.  My son made a jitterbug and named it Johnny the Jitterbug!

We also made jitter bracelets to help chase the jitters away. Each student had to count out 10 “jitter” beads  and make a bracelet with them. Have you ever heard of UV beads? They are translucent beads that turn colors when exposed to the sun. So, we made a bracelet with beads and pipe cleaners. We told them they were magic and that when they went outside, the magic would chase their jitters away. They would know that it worked because their bracelets would turn a different color. They were amazed!

  1. Renee, I love that book too! I really like your idea of dancing the jitterbug, so I'll have to add that to my lesson with that book at the start of the school year. Thanks so much!
