I have been teaching about the rainforest for a long time. Over the years, I have done a variety of rainforest activities with my class. This post is a round-up of some of the fun activities we have done. Think of it as a one-stop rainforest idea post!
Rainforest Literacy Resources
Teaching about the rainforests is one of my favorite units to teach about! My students always love learning about them and the animals that live in them. Here are some literacy resources we use.
Are you looking for fiction and nonfiction read-alouds? Check out these favorite rainforest books.
One of the benefits are thematic teaching is integrating all subject matters into a unit. During our math and literacy time, I try and add in Earth themed activities when I can.
Research and Writing
During our rainforest unit, we work on informational writing. When students have free write time, I have rainforest words out for them to use to inspire writing.
We also learn how to research and some students choose to research a rainforest animal. Our rainforest animal research pack provides scaffolding to young writers.
If you want to try a performance out, be sure to check out Bald Wolf Press. They have a Rumpus in the Rainforest play that can be adapted to the younger grades that is fun. The music is great!
