Salmon Resources

|

We are so fortunate where we live because we get to witness an amazing cycle in nature, the salmon cycle.  We live near creeks where salmon spawn in nature and near fish hatcheries.  There are not a lot of resources available for little kids, so I have put together some that I use in my classroom.

Books

Even though teaching about salmon is not that common, there are surprisingly a great selection of books.

Art

I am fortunate to teach at a school who has an amazing art teacher.  She comes to our class and teaches them all sorts of art techniques.  Last year she began teaching our first graders how to make these amazing salmon.  It’s hard to tell, but there is a a coat of metallic watercolor over the top of the salmon.  The paint makes them shimmer.  They are gorgeous!

And then my attempt at a salmon direct draw.  We used oil pastels for the fish and then cut them out.  The background was water colored.  Last, we glued the fish onto the watercolor.

Interactive Fun

We are fortunate to have live salmon just a short drive away, so we visit a fish hatchery.  At the fish hatchery, we see the natural spawning and the hatchery spawning.  It’s a great way for my class to get up close to the salmon.  When we return to class, we make an interactive wall in the classroom.  It’s a fun way to demonstrate vocabulary and the salmon life cycle.

Nonfiction

I’ve put together of handful resources that I like to use in my classroom and put them into a salmon nonfiction unit.  It includes reading passages, QR codes, interactive notebook pages, writing papers, graphic organizers and many more useful items.
