Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Coconuts

|

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a fun book to use for learning the alphabet. It was a favorite read-aloud for my son. When I moved to kindergarten I was so excited to add this book and activities to our learning! In addition to literacy activities, we turned our week into a learn with our five senses week. We explored coconuts and had a blast doing it!

We spent a week immersing ourselves in all things coconuts and Chick Chicka Boom Boom activities. This post highlights some of the activities that we did. You can find many of these activities in our Let’s Explore Coconuts Unit below.

Alphabet Activities

Throughout the week of our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom unit, we engaged in various alphabet activities. Sensory bins were filled with kinetic sand and letter beads. We used tweezers to grab the letters from the sand and name them. We also had memory games and letter matching activities.

Our main book we focused on was Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. We worked on retelling the story. Retell cards were used as a whole group for story retell practice. The cards were left up and students practiced retelling the story with a partner. Finally, they made coconut tree headbands that helped with retelling the story when they got home. The headbands were a big hit!

The last day of our Chicka Chicka Boom week was an immersion day. It was a Friday and I came to school dressed like an alphabet tree. I found some brown overalls and pinned foam alphabet letters all over them. Our school has a die-cut machine, so I was able to cut out letters from foam sheets. Of course, I couldn’t pass up this fun palm tree hat. I also found a blow-up palm tree, which made for a fun classroom prop. Throughout the day, we worked on various coconut activities that were super engaging!

Coconut Nonfiction Text

We took this opportunity to learn more about coconuts. We learned coconut vocabulary and read a nonfiction book about coconuts.

Using was senses to explore coconuts was fun for our students because many of them had not seen a coconut in real life. I always pick up a few coconuts from our local grocery store to bring in for investigation. We used our five senses to explore coconuts. An anchor chart was hung up for us to record adjectives as we came up with them.

Using Our Senses to Explore Coconuts

We set up coconut exploration stations throughout the classroom.

Each station had various sensory and science activities that we recorded in our coconut journals.

Opinion Poll

One of the stations was all about taste. Before we started I broke open one of the coconuts I had brought into the class. I showed them how you could eat coconut meat. For time’s sake, I poured shredded coconut into one of the halves and gave them some flakes to taste. Some students liked the taste, others did not. Of course, we had to collect data.

Alphabet Tree Snack

In addition to tasting real coconut, we also made an alphabet tree snack. Students were given the supplies and directions to make their own treat. They sequenced the steps and were able to take the recipe home to recreate the recipe at home. Many parents thanked me for the recipe because their child couldn’t stop talking about the alphabet treat trees!
